The Pantry Shelf – Newsletter Q1 2026

For Our Youngest Shoppers

She stood beside her mother quietly, waiting for her to finish.
I smiled and asked, “How old are you?”

“Seven,” she replied softly.

“Would you like chicken nuggets, frozen waffles… or maybe some ice cream today?”

She glanced up at her mom for approval, then looked back and answered with certainty:
“Nuggets. Chicken nuggets.”
A grin stretched from ear to ear.

This moment — small but powerful — happens every day in our pantry.

We make it a priority to offer our youngest neighbors choices and familiar foods they love. When families are facing hardship, so much feels out of their control. Something as simple as choosing nuggets or waffles can restore a sense of normalcy, comfort, and dignity for a child.

At our pantry, we believe every child deserves not only nourishment, but the chance to feel seen, heard, and empowered — even in the smallest decisions.

Because poverty takes away choices.
Together, as a community, we help give them back.

Top Shelf – Our Programs

First quarter 2026 numbers continue to climb, food costs are too high for many families in Hayward, San Leandro and the unincorporated areas of Cherryland, Ashland, Castro Valley and San Lorenzo.

Middle Shelf – Community in Action

With Gratitude

Thank you to the Eden Health Foundation for the generous $20,000 grant which will fund operations and expansion of services to provide food to more families. We are proud to be the recipient of the Eden Health District 2026 Community Health Fund Grant.

We are incredibly grateful to have been awarded a $3,000 grant from the Hayward Rotary Club on March 30th, which will help us expand food access for underserved families in Hayward.

We also sincerely appreciate the generous donation of four new tires for our food recovery van from Seever and Sons of Pleasanton—support like this keeps our work moving forward and makes a meaningful difference in our community.

A record-breaking 67,441 pounds of food was donated to us in February by the Alameda County Community Food Bank made possible by the generosity of holiday food drives. We’re deeply grateful to our community members for their support contributions to the ACCFB.

Supporting the Pantry and the Truck that Delivers It

Mobile Food Pantry

We’re filled with deep gratitude as we share a long-awaited milestone—our new vehicle is finally in production with completion on the horizon. More than just transportation, it represents hope and a new way for us to reach and serve communities in need.

As we prepare to bring it from Maine to California, we’re stepping forward with faith and compassion for those we serve. Due to rising costs from current economic tariffs, we’re facing unexpected additional expenses, and we humbly ask for your support—your donations will help cover increased costs so we can continue showing up for those who need it most. The Mobile Food Pantry is scheduled to be available for the community in July 2026.

Thank you for believing in this mission and for walking alongside us.

Please donate HERE, and Thank YOU!

The Pantry Shelf – Newsletter January 2026

Poverty Awareness Month • New Year Edition

When One Crisis Changes Everything

Poverty doesn’t always begin with a mistake. Sometimes, it begins with love.

One of our clients became homeless after leaving her job to care for a family member who needed support. What began as an act of compassion slowly became instability. When the living situation became unsafe and hostile, she had nowhere to go. Without income, savings, or immediate housing options, she now sleeps in her car — not because she failed, but because she stepped in when someone needed her.

Her story is not rare. It is a quiet reality unfolding in our community every day.

At the San Lorenzo Family Help Center (SLFHC), we meet neighbors who never expected to need help — caregivers, seniors, working families, and individuals whose lives changed after a single crisis. Poverty Awareness Month reminds us that hardship is often one moment away, and that compassion paired with action can change outcomes.

Poverty in Alameda County: The Hidden Numbers

As of the most recent data (early 2026), the poverty rate in Alameda County depends on which metric is used. While official federal numbers remain around 9.5%, local measures that account for the high cost of living in the Bay Area suggest a much higher rate of roughly 16.3% with families, seniors, immigrants, and people with disabilities disproportionately affected. Housing and childcare costs continue to push working families into food insecurity.

Top Shelf – Our Programs

In-Store Program

Our families are top shelf! We continue to grow, defeating hunger in more and more households in the cities of San Lorenzo, Hayward, San Leandro and Castro Valley.

The need for nutritional support in our community grew substantially in 2025, as we saw an approximate 20% increase in our client base year-over-year. Our year-end data highlights this trajectory: we served 1,056 unique families in November (78 new households) and reached 1,104 families in December (67 new households). These figures underscore our expanding reach and the critical importance of our mission heading into 2026.

Middle Shelf – Community in Action

Volunteers from our community came together throughout December to ensure every family was welcomed with dignity, care, and a full grocery cart. This work is only possible because of people who show up for one another.

Bottom Shelf – A New Year, A Growing Need – And a Stronger Community

As we begin a new year, we want to thank you for standing with us as our community’s needs continue to grow. Your generous financial support makes it possible for us to respond when neighbors are facing rising costs, uncertainty, or sudden hardship.

Thanks to donors like you, in 2025 we were able to help nearly 20% more individuals and families. Our pantry provided food to about 400 first-time clients. Each number represents a household facing hardship — and because of you, they were met with dignity, nourishment, and compassion.

Our Mission

Our mission is to defeat hunger in Alameda County — and to do so in a way that centers dignity, equity, and community voice.

Food justice means ensuring that every person has reliable access to nutritious, culturally appropriate food without shame or barriers. It means meeting people where they are and strengthening community systems so no one is left behind.

Top Shelf – Our Programs

In-Store Program

In the month of October, we served 1,117 unique families, 109 of which were new clients joining our San Lorenzo Family Help Center community for the first time. This rising demand may be partly linked to the government shutdown, which halted CalFresh benefits in November. We continue to see increased demands in November.

Celebrate the Season with Us!

We’re excited to offer holiday-inspired foods throughout December. Please note that quantities are limited, so we encourage you to enjoy them while they last!

We’re also happy to provide Halal food options to ensure everyone can find something they love.

Middle Shelf – Funding and Donations

The Alameda County Community Food Bank received additional funding to help address the shutdown and has increased both the amount and variety of food available to community pantries over the past few weeks.

SLFHC has secured awards to help address rising demands for food:

  • Albertsons–Safeway Foundation: $5,000
  • Alameda County Rapid Respond Food Resilience Fund: $15,000
  • Alameda County Community Food Bank: $500 (support food recovery)

Bottom Shelf – Community

Community

Community support has been incredible! Several recent food drives have filled our pantry to capacity with a diverse selection of donated foods, including festive items for the holiday. Turkeys were donated from various donors:

  • Senator Dr. Aisha Wahab

Top Shelf – Our Programs

In-Store Program

In the month of September, we served 967 unique families, 32 of which were new clients  joining our San Lorenzo Family Help Center community for the first time. The lower than expected participation was due to the extended closure during the first week of September.

Pantry Redesign

The pantry has undergone a redesign which is centered on making the shopping experience welcoming and equitable for all clients. It reflects our belief that families deserve not only food support, but the dignity of choice and the confidence of a safe, clean environment.

The following improvements have been installed in our free-food store, funded through an Alameda County Community Food Bank capacity grant.

  • Glass-door display freezer
  • Refrigerated display-deli case for premade meals
  • Multi-tiered produce shelving
  • Individual registration desks
  • Appointment text reminders
  • 3 Hip-high chairs have been added to our reception room for clients

Together, these upgrades improve food presentation, strengthen food safety practices, and affirm our commitment to creating a pantry environment that mirrors the dignity of a neighborhood grocery store.

Celebrate the Season with Us!

We’re excited to offer holiday-inspired foods for Thanksgiving and Christmas throughout November and December. Please note that quantities are limited, so we encourage you to enjoy them while they last!

We’re also happy to provide Halal food options to ensure everyone can find something they love.

Middle Shelf – Volunteers and Events

Volunteer Spotlight

Milinda serves as our weekday supervisor and is often found warmly assisting clients at registration. We are grateful for her kindness, dedication, and unwavering passion for making the pantry a welcoming space where everyone can thrive.

“I knew when I retired that I wanted to “give back” in my community. I’ve tried lots of volunteer opportunities over the years. When I called the San Lorenzo Family Help Center and went in to see what they were all about, I had a good feeling and started the same day! Now, a year and a half later, I am still onboard! I really feel like I am making a difference in the Eden Area community, and specifically in my area where we now service all of Hayward. I have developed a relationship with a lot of our clients – I know what types of food they like, what “little extras” they may need, next appointment preferences, etc. I don’t give preferential treatment, but I do treat everyone with respect and dignity.”

-Milinda Mayfield
