Volunteers at SLFHC play an essential role in the effort to defeat hunger in the unincorporated areas of Alameda County. They do everything from engaging families in food selection, organizing and distributing donations, to coordinating volunteers and fundraising. We are always seeking new volunteers to join our team, all ages and backgrounds are welcome!












We need your help!
We are launching new efforts to expand food access in our neighborhood and we need passionate volunteers to help us grow!
Immediate Openings:
- Farmers market gleaning/food donations: volunteers will be trained to collect donated produce at our local Farmers Markets on Saturday. Donations will be transported to the pantry following each collection.
- Event booth ambassadors: present information at Farmers Market tabling events and job fairs 1-2 times a month.
Launching in July, Mobile Pantry Crew: We are building a team for our new off-site mobile pantry!
- Drivers: drive large vehicles such as box trucks (see mobile truck on home page) and assist with food storage
- Registration Assistants: register clients using our web-based registration system. bilingual helpful.
- Distribution Volunteers: organize food displays for shopping, assist shoppers, and pack-up at the end each distribution
- Pantry Leads: responsible for daily reporting, contact with site, oversee the distribution and communicate with SLFHC management
Volunteer Position Descriptions
Detailed descriptions on volunteers needed on a recurring basis:
- Drivers for our food pick ups: Help us rescue food and bring it to our community! We are looking for drivers to pick up donations from our recovery partners in Dublin and Newark.
- Current shifts are Mondays from 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM (with more shifts opening soon).
- Must be 35+ years old with a clean driving record, able to comfortably lift 40 lbs, and confident driving a 21-foot cargo van.
- Desk registration: If you are outgoing, love chatting with people, and want to be the welcoming face of our organization, this role is for you! You will engage directly with clients, answer phones, manage appointments, and use basic computer skills to log food assistance data. Because our clients speak a diverse range of languages, we are especially looking for front-desk volunteers who can also provide translation. We have an ongoing, vital need for individuals who speak Spanish (Latin America), Dari, or Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese). Your language and customer service skills can make a world of difference right at our front door!
- Food distribution team: We need volunteers to assist with multiple stages of distribution. You can work behind the scenes (receiving, sorting, and shelving incoming donations) or out front helping neighbors shop.
- Fundraising, development and grant writing: We are expanding our mobile pantry to bring fresh, healthy food directly to our neighbors’ doorsteps. If you have experience in grant writing, networking, or fundraising development, your skills can help us build a sustainable future for this vital program. Join us in securing the resources we need to grow!
- Website & web content management: Help us upgrade our digital presence! If you have skills in web management, content writing, photography, or social media, we’d love your help to elevate our website and share our mission more effectively.
