Pantry Redesign
The pantry has undergone a redesign which is centered on making the shopping experience welcoming and equitable for all clients. It reflects our belief that families deserve not only food support, but the dignity of choice and the confidence of a safe, clean environment.
The following improvements have been installed in our neighborhood food hub, funded through an Alameda County Community Food Bank capacity grant.
- Glass-door display freezer
- Refrigerated display-deli case for premade meals
- Multi-tiered produce shelving
- Individual registration desks
Here are photos of the space, including the shelves that have been in place since the start.

San Lorenzo Food Pantry – November Update
As the need for food assistance continues to grow, the San Lorenzo Food Pantry is asking for community support to help meet increasing demand. Recent funding changes and rising costs have created new challenges, but with your partnership, we can continue providing food and care to local families in need.
Cash Donations
- Grant funding from the City of Hayward has been paused, creating a gap in operational support.
- Donations will help cover:
- Internet upgrades to serve more clients
- Increased waste management costs (additional receptacles)
- Fuel for food pick-up and delivery (Costco gas cards are very helpful)
- Maintenance and cleaning of our delivery vehicle
- Tariff costs for our new pantry van (an added $12,000)
- Every contribution—large or small—helps sustain our services and expand community impact.
Volunteer Opportunities
We’re seeking volunteers to help in several key areas:
- Answering phones, scheduling appointments, and providing referrals
- Delivering food to homebound clients who lost CalFresh assistance
- Registering clients on Wednesdays (bilingual volunteers especially needed in Mandarin, Vietnamese, Dari, Spanish, or Cantonese)
- Sorting, bagging, and shelving food on Mondays and Fridays
- Picking up food donations from the Hayward Farmers Market on select Saturdays (12–2 PM)
Food Drive Needs
High-demand nonperishable items include:
- Canned vegetables
- Soup
- Chili
- Boxed turkey dressing/stuffing
- Canned pumpkin
- Small turkeys
- Boxed whole-grain cereals
- Shelf-stable Asian foods
Other Ways to Help
- Donate $50 gift cards for Target or local grocery stores
- Sponsor a car wash for the pantry van (inside and out)
- Contribute toward a small pressure washer ($300–$500) for cleaning food bins
